The first Drive In Movie started in New Jersey in 1933. By 1958 there were more than 4,000 of them.
In the early days, the open air theaters ran off the shelf movies... many of which had not been in theaters for years. But by the 1950's there was a whole movie industry creating movies especially for the Drive Ins. They were regional in nature, or they were targeted at the younger audience just getting their own vehicles and using them to see their kind of movie.
If you want to see some of the very best (very worst?) of this genre, you still can. They are plating 24/7 on the streaming, FAST post cable network TVS Drive In Movie Network. It's on the WatchYour.TV platform, with the movies coming from the TVS Television Network's massive film library.
